Lupe Fiasco tells Young Black Grads that they still have much Work to Do

Dozens of young, black men who recently graduated from (Chicago) area high schools gathered Saturday to be honored for their achievement, but they also got a dose of reality from rapper Lupe Fiasco.
The local rapper began by saying, “Congratulations, you have graduated from one of the most terrible, substandard school systems in the entire world. You have just spent the last . . . 12 years receiving one of the worst educations on earth. You are at least four, five steps behind people in other countries that are younger than you.”

  1. This is the type of shit why Lupe occasionally pisses me off. Who the fuck wants to hear that on their graduation day. its possibly the happiest and saddest day of their life. they may not be on the standards of Japanese kids but to have their a monumental day in their life crushed with a speech like is straight up wrong. Especially when half American kids don't even graduate. he is such an ass for saying that. and im one of his biggest fans saying that.

    1. Part of being a great leader is to "be prepared to piss people off" thats one of collin powells principles and its true. Maybe doing the ordinary and congratulating is noy thr best way to motivate them for the future.

    3. I think it needed to be said. Youth don't grow up with that in ur face reality when it comes to these issues. And where he comes they def need raw truth.-Law

    5. Surely it is not a matter of if we WANT to hear something, but if we NEED to?? Lupe had a limited window to try to make a difference in these young men and their future. Good on him in stepping up - would have been so easy to do "rah rah - great achievement" speech and ignore that the hardest part is what comes after, and that will be the REAL achievement of their lives if they get it right

    6. Yea, I gotta agree with you here. When I read this post. I let out a huge eye role. Why did Lupe have to piss on their parade? Sometimes I think he just say shit to be provocative. He's telling the truth in many ways, yet he's also giving them the wrong information. Like, some children around the world receive no education at all. So, their substandard high school diploma better than some kid in Africa who stopped attending school in the 3rd grade. I'm assuming a lot of these young men are going to attend College. Well only a very small amount ( not sure of the stats) of people in America get a Degree. In my state I think only 20 percent have College Degrees. Even if I attended a crappy high school, I still graduated College and my chances and I have a higher chance of getting a high paying job than someone who only went to high school. Then there are people who never went to College. Attended the same high school as I did and are doing way better than I am. They're people of color like me too. So, all that doom and gloom he is laying on those is really stirring up unnecessary worry. That is the kind of shit that keeps these kids our of College. People always telling them it is too hard to go. You have to do this and that. It is easier to get into College than you think. And if you know what you are doing you can pass. Make sure you have a good adviser. Pick something you KNOW that you can do. Don't be making Cs and Bs in math then say you're going to be a doctor or major in chemistry. Most likely you cant ...........try something else.

  2. I see his reasoning behind doing so. And he was not the only one to speak to the children that way. He is telling truth. Graduating highschool is not much in the real life. And coming from those areas just put you more behind. Highschool doesn't teach you a job or responsibility. Or about banking or what a mortgage is. Graduating is just the shedding of a childish mind. It teaches repetitious knowledge. Not how to be a man or to survive. And not how to be a young black person in America.

  4. I'm from the south side of Chicago and I graduated from that same system and those words couldn't of been more true. Without being long winded with my response to put things in perspective the things we learned my senior year was on the act my junior year which means it should have been learned years before. The sad part is I was in honors classes at a school that's considered decent by most(Hubbard high school)

  6. Oh yeah let's negate the fact he ruined graduation day for hundreds of people, he's Lupe Fiasco! he's the savior of hip-hop right? regardless to the fact he basically told the kids their 12 years of school was pointless and they could've just dropped out, that's Lupe Fucking Fiasco! I'm sorry I forgot his fans think he could shoot and kill an innocent person and he'd be in the right just cause he's their fucking idol. Get off his dick and release he can be just as big of an asshole and make even bigger mistakes than kanye west and yes Kanye West is an asshole look up why he made the song I Am A God

    1. Well, glad you got that off your chest. If you read the words, Lupe was NOT ruining graduation day - he was putting it into perspective. If you love someone you tell them the truth. "If not now .. then when? If not me .. then who?"

  10. I had a problem with this at first, but then i realized it wasn't at the graduation. If it was at the graduation then it would have been a huge problem, this was totally separate from the graduation. It was just a dose of reality.

  13. He's been doing this for a while tho.. Last year when my wife gave birth, he popped up at the hospital for a surprise visit to congratulate me on "one of the worst babies in the entire world", he also called it "gay" and a "future snitch".

  14. I swear if Tupac said this shit at someone's graduation then people would be like "yeah Tupac a real nigga, he knows his shit" but since it's Lupe, it pisses you people off, hes preachy or he's trying to hard to be political, not too many rappers are doing what Lupe does.
