Lupe Fiasco says he's a Hostage of his Record Label

Lupe did an in-depth interview with the Chicago Sun Times. Breaking down what went down behind the scenes while creating Lasers, Atlantic freezing his budget, depressions, being a hostage and more.

Here's an excerpt:

"I was specifically told" -- Fiasco chuckled -- "'Don't rap too deep on this record.'" He laughed some more. "That was a specific order from the top. 'You're rapping too fast or too slow, or it's too complex.' ...

There are consequences and combat that comes from that process and the eventual compromise. With me, though, I'm not writing about someone else. I'm writing about me. This is my life. It's very personal for me. So for somebody to kind of put their fingers in that and play with that, it becomes more damaging."

"I am a hostage," Fiasco said. "I gave them what they wanted. If I didn't, at the end of the day the album wasn't coming out."

  3. Or a petition for the release of the real lasers album.. the one pre-atlantic influence. not this Atlantic records presents lupe fiasco shit.

  9. So he really doesn't like this album (especially the process of making it), but he's upset about how his fans received it? Something is not adding up.

  10. for the record i suggested that we start a second petition. i was gonna wait until i actually heard LASERS to decide whether or not i wanted to do it. but after reading this it makes me wanna do it ASAP. and for everyone going out for Fiasco Friday 2 it should be changed into a protest at Atlantic (assuming there is enough time to get permits and everything else.) we mobilized and made this happen once so there is no harm is trying it again.

  11. He's saying I was forced to make an album that was financially feasible... If not he gets the treatment where he'll get shelved be forced to pay the label $ that has yet to be recouped & then become a tax write off... Smh!

  12. Someone start a Free Lupe petition. This shut is ridiculous

  13. oh and we should try to get #FreeLupe trending on twitter.

  14. first of all: thx sean for keeping us up2date with these interviews - really appreciated.

and second: atlantic records consists of a bunch of idiots.. "the cool was not a success, change it" - you serious?? and pushing lupe that far.. i mean.. just wow.. this is sick. we should all boycott atlantic..

  15. At the end of the day.I think something good will come out of this.we just have to be patient.

    Lu keep your head up.

  16. This is so frustrating and damaging to our whole culture. I'm sure it will piss off a lot of people if they hear about it, not just the hardcore fans of Lupe. You gotta respect what he managed to to with Lasers in the end.

That's what is getting me. I like the album, but for the people who don't like it, Lu hasn't been hyping up the album.

He is setting low expectations when really the album is exactly what he said it was going to be.

People say "oh they changed this or ruined this." No! He had a live band people of course they don't sound the same. When he played the backing tracks live they sound just like the album.

  18. This is really heartbreaking to read. It gives me another perspective on how to view the album, on one hand I love it, but on another hand I know it's what brought him to this point... It literally hurts to read that he isn't proud of the album, and gave the label what they want..If releasing him from the label will help, then #freelupe now!!! I don't want him to stop making music, wheres that petition?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I hope he's still interested in doing mixtapes. Hopefully, the Fahrenheit 1/15 series will live on. I mean, if he doesn't want to do albums for his label anymore, let him half ass it. Fuckin greedy, corporate pigs.

However, if he wants to still make music in general, he can keep doing mixtapes. Lupe Fiasco will live on. The Malcolm X of our music and time...

  20. How the f do you make the most inspirational mc in the game depressed?....wow Atlantic..wow..The cool was a failure?..have these guys heard streets on fire?,fighters?..do they know what they have? f..it im just getting angrier by the minute,

RIP-lupe bring on blu, and cudi

  21. Thats it! I'm not buying or supporting "lasers" cuz in doing so means that I support Atlantic and I don't. That shit is wrong what they are doing to him. If lasers sells more than "The Cool" and "F&L" they are gonna force him do the same thing to his other albums. Record companies are evil. Time to protest them bastards again.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ok Lupe has stated on multiple occasions now on why lasers is the way it is, so can ya'll stop getting mad at Lupe...and my boy sounds so depressed, man this is sad

  23. Sickening stuff to read. Te sooner he gets off the label, the better.

    ReplyDelete
  24. this bull crap lupe i mean Wasalu should keep his head up and live life the way he wants he cant let Atlantic tell him the way he should make music which is pretty much his life

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cudi is a good rapper but his albums suck. 90% if it is about weed and poppy beats

    ReplyDelete
  26. How many more albums does lupe have to make for Atlantic? Once he is finished with his current contract he needs to just say fuck you to all the labels and produce his own music. It is very easy and cheap to get your own music on amazon and itunes. If radiohead and Nine Inch Nails can do it, lupe can too

    ReplyDelete
  27. ^^ Two more. TGARA and maybe a greatest hits

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wonder what it would take for lupe to get out of the contract early

    ReplyDelete
  29. They might shit on him for the Greatest Hits, and not make it part of his album deal, the way Def Jam tried to do it to Nas. Lupe should have dropped a public letter to Atlantic and make them the assholes for stuff like this.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What's really sad are the idiots up here defending an album that the artist making doesn't even like.

    ReplyDelete
  31. He's gotta continue to spew trash about them in public.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i could of sworn he says he likes the album just hates the trials/tribulations it to took to complete it.

  33. ^^^ that is what he said but niggas love to take shit out of context

  34. Does Atlantic know dat The Cool sold over 500,000 copies (which is rare nowadays), do they know dat Food And Liquor is a grammy award winning album?. all of dat took place wen Lupe was being himself and wasnt stressed, Atlantic doesnt understand the shit they made Lupe do is not wat everyone wants, 1st of all, ppl barely buy albums anyway so making this a pop album just for sells makes u look stupid, 2.Lupe doesnt make songs for the clubs, songs like I Don't Wanna Care Right Now doesnt even sound right being played in the club, Lupe is more of a topic type rapper, he doesnt need to make club hits to get noticed or sells, The Cool is a gold selling album meaning that over half a million ppl bought it and it wasnt as poppy as Lasers is, now wat happens if Lasers sells way less than dat? it'll b ur fault Atlantic becuz u pretty much put a gun to Lupe's head to make the album like this for just a quick sell and then failed to do so, fuck u Atlantic, Lu didnt need this bullshit, 1st u treat Saigon bad and now Lupe (who's very popular now) like shit and u sit there and treat guys like Wiz Khalifa and T.I like kings just becuz they have an imagine that the majority will like? fuck u Atlantic, Free Lupe!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. No he said he likes some of the songs like all black everything, but not the songs that he was forced to do like the show goes on

  36. "I’m comfortable and happy with the record as a whole, where before there was an imbalance. I hate this record, the process of making this record, and I love this record. What I had to go through was not fun, the ugliness I saw in people."

    ReplyDelete
  37. Strange. We fought for this album, so we're gonna buy it, and its gonna be big. What if it does become his biggest record? Atlantic might think they were right. They're gonna want to control all of lupe's albums like this. Some fans are gonna think lupes a sellout and stop listening. Other, "mainstream" rap fans are gonna gain interest, while the originals lose it. Its a sad downward spiral. Dammit Atlantic, such sinister idiots. Lupe, it seems, is losing interest. Who's album is this? Certainly not lupe's. Is it the fan's or the label's? Let's make it our's, the fan's. Let's save Lupe. Those guys above got the right idea. We've done it before. Either Fiasco Friday II needs to be rethought or a Fiasco Friday III needs to be made.

This is what I was thinking. If Atlantic feel this sells or gets received better, will it become the norm for his next few albums on Atlantic? Will they force this shit on him? Or will they see the backlash from the fans that caused and let Lupe do what Lupe does best.
It's like he said in the in an interview, "if they want me to paint poodles, I'll paint poodles, but i'll tell everybody I'm painting poodles" and he's told us, so should we as fans act on it and tell the record label that we don't want these overly hook orientated songs crowbarred into Lupe's albums?

I think it stupid that they signed Lupe as a lyricist then want him tone it down and do club songs, is that what the other artists are for?

    ReplyDelete
  39. ^ I agree, I love Lu to the fullest, but I can't take another Atlantic records heavily influenced album.

    ReplyDelete
  40. He needs to do mixtapes and tour performing his old material and mixtape records. I know he says oversaturation cheapens you, but we don't wanna hear this type of garbage again.

  42. Someone start a "Free Every GOOD Hip-Hop Artist" petition. This is exactly why I don't listen to Hip-Hop and haven't since the late
90s...because it SUCKS. Why can't the record labels be happy with just having Diddy and Jay-Z under their thumbs??? They ALWAYS sucked!!! Must they make us hate an entire genre of music??? On second thought, perhaps that is exactly their point. Imho, not selling out is a tough job, but somebody's got to do it!
