This is a report from someone who attended Lupe's keynote at RACC Dayton.
Lupe said Atlantic wanted him to sign a contract that would give them 25% of anything he makes from shows or deals with other companies like Nike or whatever. (Sean's note: That's a 360 deal)He told them NO so they threatened him by not pushing any of his new songs on the radio or giving him money to make the videos (the I'm Beamin' video came out of his own pocket). Also they basically don't like his music or the way Lupe put it 'They think I'm whack'. So Atlantic sent him hooks they wanted him to do. He recorded them and sent them back but they didn't like them anymore and tried to have him change the hooks like 60 different times. In the end he had enough.

wow
ReplyDeleteDamn, them record labels greedy as hell, didn't lupe says he made most his money from performing? Whatever, Fuck Atlantic and the horse they rode in on. I wonder how many hooks on Lasers are actually ones Lupe wrote? I really hope the rally makes Atlantic release a date for Lasers.
ReplyDelete....and no wonder the I'm Beaming music video didnt look expensive Lol, but nah it was still dope as fuck
"I AM SLAVE TO MYSELF,DONT DISOBEY MY BOSS"
ReplyDeleteLupe is screwed.
ReplyDeleteThis is sad. No wonder he started crying during his last concert
at first anyone would be pissed.
ReplyDeletebut if lupe ever made kanye money,
i'd be willing to give 25% to the record company for the term of my contract.
Wait!
ReplyDeleteWhy is Atlantic releasing Food and Liquor 2 then? or am I missing something here?
"he started crying during his last concert"??
ReplyDelete25% of everything he makes...
ReplyDeleteConcert revenue
Merchandise sales
Endorsement deals
Ringtones
If you already have a contract and then switch and sign one of those, you're stupid.
^ hugh isaacs
ReplyDeletenaw...
they aren't. dude said HE just started working on it because he wasnt gonna sit around and do nothing. HE released go to sleep cuz there had been no new music. It's not a single off of anything. It just exists, in terms of being pushed. That's why it's not on itunes. It isn't via Atlantic its via Lupe.
Just comes to show how grimy people can get!
ReplyDeleteI think they're just afraid! AFRAID of Lupe's take on things...they aren't used to an artist with his type of edge.
25% ...? That's a bit much. Lupe KNOWS his worth, and KNOWS he capable of making mad cheese and probably just doesn't wanna share with some screwed up ass label like Atlantic.
I wonder who's sitting behind that desk saying his work is trash...
Because I really just don't get it--Every song Lu has ever made has had a positive message..
People just don't wanna see change..
smh...
I think I can speak for us ALL when I say, "ATLANTIC RECORDS CAN SUCK A FAT ONE!"
smh.

this deal they wanted him to sign was pre Lupe.n.d. That's why everything started to go south after the cool, at the peak of Lupe's achievements (financially and chartwise that is)
ReplyDelete@luella...what?
ReplyDeletefirst of all...Lupe used to make songs about crack. So don't say EVERY song.
secondly. They aren't afraid. They wanted to strong-arm him into giving them more money. What's that have to do with being afraid? It's a calculated business decision. I can't say I think they are right, but it's about the bottom-line. Bob Dylan, Tupac, The Beatles, and many more "edge" artists were released on majors, so stop acting like Atlantic is a room full of white men afraid of a smart black dude. IT'S COMPLETELY ABOUT MONEY.
yo FUCK ATLANTIC! dont these people know music history? u ever hear of bob dylan? does everything have to be the same dumb shit we hear on the radio. i disconnected my antenna cuz all i need is my iphone's playlist wit every lupe track that ever dropped, mixtape or album. radio hasnt been good in a minute. every other song is money, clubs, girls, alcohol, or guns.
ReplyDeletePHARRELL needs to step up to the plate and BUY OUT LUPE'S CONTRACT. that dude has more millions than he knows what to do with. sell some more t-shirts and buy out ur homey's contract so we get hip hop back on track.
GO TO SLEEP ATLANTIC!
GO TO SLEEP!
ENOUGH OF THE BULLSHIT ALREADY.
FIASCO FRIDAY: IT'S ON! WE'RE STORMIN' ATLANTIC BY THE END OF THAT DAY IF THEY DON'T GIVE US A SOLID RELEASE DATE.
^^
ReplyDeleteits about money, but they are blackballing him into accepting a deal or else they turn down his exposure..
so at the end of the day lupe will lose money no matter what he choses
^^

^^^
ReplyDeleteOf course, It's totally about the money--OBVIOUSLY. But still..it said that Atlantic doesn't like the music he's making ("They think I'm whack")...I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY.
The LABEL wants a certain sound of him..
Sounds like Lu just wants to be himself.
*shrugs*
And @ Patrick Aveni---I FEEL YOU!!!!
:D
Damn I can't wait!
October 15th can't come fast enough!
^^ because its a label....and the shit they want him to sound like makes them money
ReplyDeleteb.o.b. did it. didn't have a choice, but he did it. THAT is what they wanted. I applaud Lupe for fighting for his control. But it seems to be a losing battle.
I bet they think he's whack cause he didn't sell out like B.o.B.
ReplyDeleteFuckin' greedy ass Atlantic. If only Lupe signed with Jay when he offered.
Lupe's career is done
ReplyDelete:(
I'm sorry, but without jumping to conclusions, I would like to know, how reliable this information is?
ReplyDeleteDidn't it come from an anonymous user?
^
ReplyDeleteAn artist of his kind would never go down just like that. If his career were to "end" over all this bullshit then that would mean there's no hope left for real hip hop.
That'd just be proof.
But did b.o.b have tht, '25%'?
ReplyDeleteBut did b.o.b have tht, '25%'?
ReplyDeleteThat's why we're staying Independent!!! FNF UP!!! Keep ya head up Lu...we gotcha here in the CHI mane.
ReplyDeleteHe is obviously not dumbing it down
ReplyDeletefucked up
ReplyDeleteAnd my friends dont believe me that music industry is fucked up...
ReplyDeleteWe will never hear another Lupe album
ReplyDeleteSad
Well I can understand this, Atlantic is a business they gotta make there money. The music business is failing and they don't wanna risk losing money, We are dedicated to Lupe and his music, but to them were not by the millions. Its the people who listen to radio and request that type of sound on the radio.. and Lupe doesnt make that sound aka money.. Lupe needs to go independent w/ artist like Wale, Diggy, J. Cole etc.. a REVOLUTION
ReplyDeleteb.o.b. does have a 360 so whether or not its 25% atlantic gets a piece off everything. and since he sold 4+ million singles, and decently moved albums, Atlantic is eating good. That's what they wanted from Lupe.
ReplyDeleteDiggy signed with Atlantic bro, and Wale with Scope.
ReplyDeleteThats what you call selling yo soul
ReplyDelete&
Lupe aint down for that bullshit ass contract
I hope this #fiascofriday gets something going at least. Things would only get worse if everyone just waited around. I'm the guy that originally posted that comment btw.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteAs Kanye so eloquently put it, "This shit radicalus!"
Lupe its time to dip out man, your following is way to deep to stay with Atlantic and deal with that shit!
-Brooks
THE MUSIC INDUSRTY IS THE DEVILS PLAYGROUND...ARTIST THAT DELIVER POSTIVE MESSAGES DON'T BELONG IN IT!
ReplyDeleteU HAVE TO BASICALLY SELL YOUR SOUL FOR IT. eVER SINCE LUPE TURNED DOWN THE DEAL WITH JAYZ HIS CAREER HASN'T BEEN WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. LUPE IS OBVIOUSLY THE MOST TALENTED AND GIFTED ARTIST IN THE GAME BUT IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER ANYMORE BCUZ LOOK WHATS HAPPENING. SMH!
I WISH HIM MANY BLESSINGS! HOPE HE CAN GET OUT OF HIS CONTRACT AND GO INDIE SOON...
@Luella 25% is not much at all!!!
ReplyDeleteHe's left with 75%. The number doesn't seem accurate to me. That is actually pretty good.
Wasalu, please, please just sign the deal. Get Lasers released, you'll be better off for it.
ReplyDeleteLupe, don't sign it. Don't give in. People see you as an idol, a role model, etc. If they see you giving in, then...
ReplyDelete^^^ I agree with @CT 100...
ReplyDeleteAt above anonymous commenter saying he should sign it, there's more to the deal than just 25% of his assets. Remember he was talking to MTV about the wanted him to sign away his publishing rights so he not only wouldn't make money off of ringtones and song downloads but he also wouldn't have any right to say how they could be used. He wants his work to be his. To take care of him and his family. Not for some record exec to get rich off his blood sweat and tears. I have faith Wasalu knows what he's doing.
ReplyDeleteThis just shows how money-oriented people are nowadays. Lupe works hard to make real music, but Atlanta doesn't give a shit. It's not about the money for Lu and that's another reason I love this guy
ReplyDeleteAlso remember that Lupe's manager gets a cut as well as others so its not 75% to Lupe, its around 35-25% to Lupe after the money is spread around
ReplyDeleteLupe's songs weren't about cocaine. Thats a dumbass remark. If that's all you obtain from those songs, I feel sorry for you.
ReplyDeleteThe game is all fucked up. Remember Superstar. That was such a big hit. It's obvious Lupe doesn't fit into Atlantic. B.o.B, Diggy, T.I., all of those people have mainstream appeal. Atlantic is trying to mold him into something he is not.
Lupe, fuck Atlantic. Come record with me if you have to. :)
Lupe cried at a show? Is there footage of that out there? Ah, Man...if this fact is true than yeah that album is not coming out unless Lupe budges or the label. I am curious how this protest will go. Whether it will sway any Atlantic heads' minds. I applaud Lu for sticking to his grounds. Makes me respect him even more. It's a damn shame though! Reminds me of NERD's fucked up deal with Virgin once upon a time but this shit right here is worst. Damn Lu....they really want you to Dumb it down, smh
ReplyDeleteNow it all makes sense. It's all about the money.
ReplyDeleteIn that case fuck Atlantic. Let all hell break loose at the protest. Atlantic don't know shit anyways. If you think Lu's music is whack then you don't know shit.
This is really upsetting. The reason why LASERS has not been released all this time is because Atlantic is greedy.
"It's just these stupid motherfuckers never get it, it's pathetic"

Atlantic Free LASERS and GO To Sleep!
My question was, how do we really know that the anonymous user who wrote this is not lying?
ReplyDeleteCan anyone else confirm Lupe did say this at the show?
I still think it's fucked up, if this is really what happened.
^^ it's definitely true
ReplyDeleteilluminati wants lupe to sell his soul and he is not doing it period.... the end.
ReplyDeletethis is how topac n biggy got killed because of money. i hope they shut lupe up forever. because if they do im fucking sum motherfuckers up
ReplyDeletekeep yo faith as we chase the cool
lupe fiasco the coolest
greedy bitch ass atlantic
i mean i hope they dont shut lupe up myb im jus pissed off they some hoe ass niggas
ReplyDeletedoes anyone know wht Klive isnt working>
ReplyDelete^^ ITS THE ILLUMINATI THEY ARE ATTACKING FUCK!

This pisses me off... I hate Atlantic.. more than ever now.. Lupe doin the right thing even if he not puttin a lot of music out right now.. He still the best in the game... Atlantic is a greedy ass gayfish.. #FreeLasers and Atlantic... GO TO SLEEP!!!
ReplyDeleteDON'T START WITH THE ANTI-SEMITIC BULLSHIT!
ReplyDeleteSo the answer simply is...boycott all future Atlantic releases no matter who the artist is...but this boycott will need to catch mainstream attention to be effective...so we need a list of all Atlantic artist and future release dates. If Lu suffers...they all suffer...
ReplyDeletePlease add that to the Fiasco Friday speaking agenda if it's not already on there.
-Food4Thought
^^good idea, but it would never work. theres not nearly enough lupe support mainstream to stop the people who actually buy albums to not buy a TI, Plies, Wiz Khalifa, etc. CD. Atlantic is a powerful institution and they will keep moving on w/ or w/out Lupe. But i say he fights it until they let him go cuz that point will come
ReplyDelete^^^Hah! I had the same idea; I just sent Atlantic an email saying that's what I'm doing, and that's what I'm sure a majority of Lupe's fans are doing, unless something comes from this situation.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone else wants to shoot them a similar email do it at: contact@atlanticrecords.com.
And more than just sending them an email... actually boycott them!
super fucked up!
ReplyDeleteWho buys music anymore?? BWAHAHAHA
ReplyDelete25% Atlantic profits ain't too bad...
ReplyDeletethis is fact.
Atlantic needs to make some money.
remember Lupe can't print 500,000 Albums with his own cash.
but for Atlantic they prolly do that for 500 dollars.
I'm Only defending Atlantic to a certain extent.
But, I just have a hard time with them trying to stick pre-made hooks with lupe.
I would rather have Lupe work under Kanye West, and have Kanye help write all his hooks.
Fresh K
There's nothing wrong with Lu's hooks though... NOTHING AT ALL.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with Lu's hooks though... NOTHING AT ALL.
ReplyDeleteYea I was at the RACC to see him speak and when I heard him answer that question you can really tell that he is just getting tired, label companies are running good artist's like Lupe dry and at the end of the day they just give into it. Its nice to see that Lupe just wont give in because you can really tell that he wants to give his fans what they want but in the end its not the fans its what the label wants.
ReplyDeletelupe songs arent about coke?
ReplyDeletewhat is Failure about?
what's he mean on turnt up when he said he will throw a ball?
how bout fire when he said i'm back to pitchin with pales....
how bout pop pop a song about shooting people?
get over yourselves
^^ Ok so some people were wrong about his songs, but for the most part he has a positive meaning. And almost all his songs, that i've found, that talk about drugs or shooting people or anything along those lines were from when he was making mixtapes and such in the beginning. Bottom line, THIS SHIT IS WRONG!!
ReplyDeleteI hate how record companies are nowadays. So damn selfish. This is why I like how Lupe is. He is his own man and never want to be the same as anyone to get attention. Man, it's irritating how people just are so cruel and I hope Lupe just leave the company because he coan do so much better somewhere else & his true fans will always support him. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Atlantic being greedy? Lupe has a proven fanbase. Moving a Gold album is a gift from God these days, something Lupe can easily do. They should be grateful even if Lupe went wood, which is the norm these days.
ReplyDeletewhy cant Hov buy out Lupe's contract and sign him to his label... would be dope :P
ReplyDeleteLupe should ask Jay Z to buy his contract out. Jay Z got money.
ReplyDeleteAHA Anon above thinking the exact same. LOL. xD So on point.
ReplyDeleteJay is with the illuminati though..! so its still a lose lose...
ReplyDeleteIt's not that simple..
ReplyDeleteAn artist can't simply 'ask' another artist for money.. Think about how that makes them look, for starters.
Then think about afterwards.
Would Lu owe Jay from then on out?
I am a big Hova fan but let's keep it real....Jay-Z is a business-man. I believe there is a reason why Lu didnt sign up with Hov in the first place, smh. This shit is making me sad:(. At least I know that NERD's Nothin and Kanye's new shit coming out soon...but damn Lu, I can listen to his shit without skipping a track. I swear when I bought "The Cool"....I listen to that for like 3 months without listening to anything else...That album was the realest shit I ever heard in my life! Plus, Soundtrak is just a beast with the production. Excuse my comment, just freestylin'. *Damn, Damn, DAMN!Goodtimes, smh
ReplyDeleteFuck atlantic...str8 up...
ReplyDeletesmh @ all the illumanti comments! Just ignorant :/
ReplyDeletethe illumanti does not fucking exist in the music industry. Alot people in the industry sell their souls by doing "sinful acts" to get ahead... greed,drugs...sex extc. but Illumanti??? uhmmmm NO! do your research people.
Illuminati got him ^^^^
ReplyDeletesmh at you saying lupe can easily go gold...nigga went gold with 1/2 albums. ONE song did well on the charts. I'm not sayin I'm with Atlantic. I'm a huge Lupe fan, but from a MONETARY standpoint they're being businessmen. He makes way more money off tours than albums so why would they wanna push his shit and not get some from his shows?
ReplyDeleteSome one like Lupe isn't fit for mainstream, not saying he's bad, he's my favorite rapper. But I think the best thing would be for Lupe to break contract with Atlantic, and then go on an Indie label that'll let him have his creative control. Fuck Atlantic records
ReplyDeleteJay-Z can't buyout Lupe's contract because Jay-Z doesn't care about anyone's career but Jay-z's (and maybe at this point Beyonce's). I've been a fan of Jay's since 97. I'm not hating on jay but he never really pushes his own artists (look at the roc a fella roster...how many releases never saw the light of day and were promised for a long time). You can try to argue Kanye with me but Dame signed Kanye NOT Jay and a big part of Kanye's success came from his own determination.
ReplyDelete^ literally impossible. stupid comment. you can't break a contract or your financially obligated ANYWAY
ReplyDeletehowever, say lupe did break his contract, doesn't that mean he probably would end it with LupEND after Lasers orr something, as he originallly intended to...
ReplyDeleteI think their should be a fiasco friday once a month, or maybe a protest the 15th of every month, until they release his album. I know that sounds kinda extreme and all but I don't think one protest would be enough. This is an important issue. There is a message that needs to be sent not only to Atlantic but other record labels that has the same principles and one of that principle is you have to be pop or follow the trend in order for a label to endorse you. This trend needs to stop, its rediculous that someone with as much talent as Lupe, who is I think is one of the best song writers of our time (like what Jay-z said, according to Lupe)and have a positive message at that, (which is hard to come by in the hip hop world) be over looked at because he's songs are not surposely pop enough. I think a protest every month or every other month isn't to much to ask for isn't it.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I think Atlantics' not trying to BMF (build minds faster).
atlantic can fuck themsellves up,,,its so depressing to see this,,,,,,like they degrading Lu or something,,,,now its like Lu isnt good enough,,,well they should know hez the BEST out there,,,,,,Lu we love u for life,,,,,Lasers
ReplyDelete^^Yoh lupe's songs that talk about drugs are mostly metaphors for other things like failure also I think pharell should buy him out of his contract for real, he will make mad cash. FUCK U ATLANTIC, oh wait I think he cried at that concert cause his little brother died
